The only railway company in Finland, state-owned. The most important function of it is to do freight and passenger traffic[?] operation and the maintenance and building of the railway network.

The group of companies also operates trucking and bus traffic, it practises catering activities and real estate management and produces data technological and telecommunications services for the transport and logistics sectors. It owns a bus company Pohjolan Liikenne[?] and a transport company Transpoint[?].

Altogether the group of companies includes 21 companies employing a total of about 14,400 persons. The President and CEO of the VR group of companies is Henri Kuitunen.
