The Volga is a river in Western Russia. It is the longest river in Europe, 3,690 km (2,293 miles).
Rising in the Valdai Range[?], it flows mainly East and South through Volgograd to the Caspian Sea. It drains most of Western Russia and its many large reservoirs provide important irrigation and hydroelectric power. The Moscow-Volga Canal, the Volga-Don Canal, and the Mariinsk[?] Canal system form navigable waterways from the country's capital, Moscow to the White Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov. High levels of chemical pollution are currently causing environmental concern.
In Russia it also is the name of a brand of automobiles from GAZ.
