Vigo County, Indiana

Vigo County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 105,848. The county's county seat is Terre Haute, Indiana6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,063 km² (410 mi²). 1,045 km² (403 mi²) of it is land and 19 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.75% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 105,848 people, 40,998 households, and 26,074 families residing in the county. The population density is 101/km² (262/mi²). There are 45,203 housing units at an average density of 43/km² (112/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.66% White, 6.04% African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.22% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. 1.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 40,998 households out of which 29.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.00% are married couples living together, 11.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.40% are non-families. 30.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.90% under the age of 18, 14.30% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,184, and the median income for a family is $42,957. Males have a median income of $32,854 versus $22,381 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,620. 14.10% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.60% are under the age of 18 and 9.50% are 65 or older.
