Verse

A verse is a literary composition, often in rhyme and frequently (though not necessarily) containing a certain number of metrical feet.

What is accepted as poetry may be comprised of verses and each of these may consist of a regular number of lines.

'Verse' is often defined in such a way as to distinguish it as being inferior to poetry as such. However, it should be remembered that all poetry, at least in its general sense, is formulated from verse. In this respect, it can be considered to bear a similar relation to poetry as grass to flowering plants, all of which, there is little doubt, owe their substantial origins to it. Nevertheless, it may also be important to note that 'inspiration' is usually referred to as the agency responsible for raising poetry to a higher level than verse in itself alone.
