According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.26% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,724 people, 852 households, and 442 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,358.4/km² (3,511.1/mi²). There are 937 housing units at an average density of 738.3/km² (1,908.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 95.88% White, 2.55% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 852 households out of which 18.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.7% are married couples living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 48.1% are non-families. 42.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 24.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.02 and the average family size is 2.80.
