Constitution of Vermont

The constitution of the State of Vermont was first enacted in 1777. At this time the Republic of Vermont was an independent nation, and did not join the United States until 1791. The Vermont constitution was the first in the country to ban slavery, and to grant voting rights to non-land owners.
