Vance County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 42,954. Its county seat is Henderson6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 699 km² (270 mi²). 657 km² (254 mi²) of it is land and 42 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.04% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 42,954 people, 16,199 households, and 11,647 families residing in the county. The population density is 65/km² (169/mi²). There are 18,196 housing units at an average density of 28/km² (72/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 48.21% White, 48.31% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.03% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 4.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,199 households out of which 33.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.00% are married couples living together, 20.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.10% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,301, and the median income for a family is $36,389. Males have a median income of $28,284 versus $21,433 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,897. 20.50% of the population and 16.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.70% are under the age of 18 and 19.30% are 65 or older.
