Val Verde County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 44,856. Its county seat is Del Rio6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 8,372 km² (3,232 mi²). 8,211 km² (3,170 mi²) of it is land and 161 km² (62 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.92% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 44,856 people, 14,151 households, and 11,320 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (14/mi²). There are 16,288 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.36% White, 1.54% African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 18.22% from other races, and 2.60% from two or more races. 75.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,151 households out of which 42.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.50% are married couples living together, 13.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.00% are non-families. 17.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.11 and the average family size is 3.55.

In the county, the population is spread out with 32.10% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 19.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 97.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,376, and the median income for a family is $31,434. Males have a median income of $26,485 versus $18,039 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,096. 26.10% of the population and 22.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 33.80% are under the age of 18 and 26.40% are 65 or older.
