Utica, Mississippi

Utica is a town located in Hinds County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 966.

Geography Utica is located at 32°6'12" North, 90°37'20" West (32.103426, -90.622214)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.33% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 966 people, 339 households, and 241 families residing in the town. The population density is 124.7/km² (323.0/mi²). There are 397 housing units at an average density of 51.3/km² (132.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 30.54% White, 66.36% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.07% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 3.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 339 households out of which 29.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.8% are married couples living together, 27.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.43.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $27,614, and the median income for a family is $30,083. Males have a median income of $28,594 versus $21,932 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,491. 27.1% of the population and 17.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 37.1% are under the age of 18 and 24.5% are 65 or older.
