The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is a U.S. government agency that studies and monitors the geology of lands in the United States.

Founded on March 3, 1879, it is a research organization with no regulatory responsibility. Since 1962, it has been involved in global, lunar and planetary exploration and mapping. It is an agency of the United States Department of the Interior and has 10,000 employees.
