Urk

Urk (population: 16,489) is a town in the central Netherlands, in the province of Flevoland. The municipality covers an area of 104.98 km² (of which 97.37 km² water).

Urk is first mentioned in the 10th century, when it still was an island in the Zuiderzee. In 1939, a dike from the mainland to Urk ended the town's island status. Later in the 20th century, surrounding areas were reclaimed from the sea.

Still a fisher's town, Urk's inhabitants are known as being very religious (Reformed).
