Union County, South Dakota

Union County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 12,584. Its county seat is Elk Point6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,210 km² (467 mi²). 1,192 km² (460 mi²) of it is land and 17 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.43% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 12,584 people, 4,927 households, and 3,517 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (27/mi²). There are 5,345 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.85% White, 0.33% African American, 0.37% Native American, 1.34% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 1.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,927 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.00% are married couples living together, 6.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.00% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.30 males.
