Union County is a county located in the U.S. State of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 13,442. Its county seat is Lake Butler, Florida6.

History Union County was created in 1921. It was named to honor the concept of unity . Union County is the location of Florida's male penitentiary.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 647 km² (250 mi²). 622 km² (240 mi²) of it is land and 24 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.77% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 13,442 people, 3,367 households, and 2,606 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (56/mi²). There are 3,736 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.62% White, 22.84% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 1.50% from two or more races. 3.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,367 households out of which 41.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.70% are married couples living together, 15.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.60% are non-families. 19.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.80% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 39.80% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 7.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 183.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 215.20 males. This extremely skewed gender distribution is the result of the male prison population in the county.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,563, and the median income for a family is $37,516. Males have a median income of $28,571 versus $22,083 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,333. 14.00% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.60% are under the age of 18 and 16.20% are 65 or older.
