Unicoi County, Tennessee

Unicoi County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 17,667. Its county seat is Erwin6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 483 km² (186 mi²). 482 km² (186 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.19% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 17,667 people, 7,516 households, and 5,223 families residing in the county. The population density is 37/km² (95/mi²). There are 8,214 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (44/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.96% White, 0.07% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 1.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,516 households out of which 26.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% are non-families. 27.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the county, the population is spread out with 20.50% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 26.50% from 45 to 64, and 18.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,863, and the median income for a family is $36,871. Males have a median income of $30,206 versus $20,379 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,612. 13.10% of the population and 8.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.70% are under the age of 18 and 13.50% are 65 or older.
