Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 483 km² (186 mi²). 482 km² (186 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.19% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 17,667 people, 7,516 households, and 5,223 families residing in the county. The population density is 37/km² (95/mi²). There are 8,214 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (44/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.96% White, 0.07% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 1.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,516 households out of which 26.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% are non-families. 27.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
