Uintah County, Utah

Uintah County is a county located in the U.S. State of Utah. As of 2000, the population is 25,224. It was named for the Ute Indians, the tribe that lives in the basin. Its county seat is Vernal6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 11,652 km² (4,499 mi²). 11,596 km² (4,477 mi²) of it is land and 57 km² (22 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 25,224 people, 8,187 households, and 6,541 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (6/mi²). There are 9,040 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.73% White, 0.11% African American, 9.38% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.05% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 3.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,187 households out of which 44.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.70% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.10% are non-families. 17.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.05 and the average family size is 3.45.

In the county, the population is spread out with 34.60% under the age of 18, 10.70% from 18 to 24, 25.40% from 25 to 44, 19.30% from 45 to 64, and 9.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 99.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,518, and the median income for a family is $38,877. Males have a median income of $33,966 versus $21,199 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,571. 14.50% of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.60% are under the age of 18 and 10.40% are 65 or older.
