UB

The Polish Urzad Bezpieczenstwa (State Security Office), or UB, was founded in 1944. It was renamed in 1956 to the Sluzba Bezpieczenstwa (State Security Service), or SB, and was dissolved in 1990 with the end of the communist era.

The primary duties of the UB/SB were internal security, the recruitment of informants and aggressive covert actions against dissidents.

The slang term for secret policemen, Ubeks, is derived from the initials of the UB.
