Troup County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 58,779. The county's county seat is LaGrange, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,155 km² (446 mi²). 1,072 km² (414 mi²) of it is land and 83 km² (32 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.19% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 58,779 people, 21,920 households, and 15,607 families residing in the county. The population density is 55/km² (142/mi²). There are 23,824 housing units at an average density of 22/km² (58/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 65.80% White, 31.87% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 1.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 21,920 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.10% are married couples living together, 17.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,469, and the median income for a family is $41,891. Males have a median income of $31,863 versus $22,393 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,626. 14.80% of the population and 12.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.70% are under the age of 18 and 14.00% are 65 or older.
