Trope

A trope is the use of a word in a figurative deviation of what is considered the literal or normal form. It comes from the greek word, tropos, which means, manner, way, kind, guise, or turn.

There are four kinds of tropes:

metonymy as in cause and effect.
irony as in contraries.
metaphor as in comparatives.
synecdoche as in the distribution of the whole into the part.
