Travis County, Texas

Travis County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 812,280. Its county seat is Austin6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,647 km² (1,022 mi²). 2,562 km² (989 mi²) of it is land and 85 km² (33 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.21% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 812,280 people, 320,766 households, and 183,798 families residing in the county. The population density is 317/km² (821/mi²). There are 335,881 housing units at an average density of 131/km² (340/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 68.21% White, 9.26% African American, 0.58% Native American, 4.47% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 14.56% from other races, and 2.85% from two or more races. 28.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 320,766 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.60% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.70% are non-families. 30.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 14.70% from 18 to 24, 36.50% from 25 to 44, 18.20% from 45 to 64, and 6.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 104.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $46,761, and the median income for a family is $58,555. Males have a median income of $37,242 versus $30,452 for females. The per capita income for the county is $25,883. 12.50% of the population and 7.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.90% are under the age of 18 and 7.60% are 65 or older.
