Track cycling/miss and out

Miss and Out or Devil Take the Hindmost is a form of track cycling where a somewhat large group of individual riders race around the velodrome. Several times during the race a bell rings and the last so many riders over the finish line are eliminated from the race. The net effect is that the weaker riders have to work harder just to stay in the race and if they survive once are more likely to be eliminated the next time the bell rings. When the field has been sufficiently reduced the remaining riders sprint for the finsh with the first rider over the line being declared the winner.
