Totem pole

Totem poles are carved from great trees, often cedar, along the Pacific coast of North America.

The poles often have lineage crests on them. During the nineteenth century, the great houses had poles in front of them. Many villages also had mortuary poles.

The Northwest Coast Native Americans carved poles. Today, poles are being carved and erected up and down the coast.
