Tonawanda Reservation, Genesee County, New York

Tonawanda Reservation is an Indian reservation located in Genesee County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the Indian reservation had a total population of 533. A small part of the reservation is in Erie County.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the Indian reservation has a total area of 24.0 km² (9.3 mi²). 23.8 km² (9.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 533 people, 186 households, and 121 families residing in the Indian reservation. The population density is 22.4/km² (58.0/mi²). There are 192 housing units at an average density of 8.1/km² (20.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the Indian reservation is 52.53% White, 2.63% African American, 39.40% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.19% Pacific Islander, 2.44% from other races, and 2.81% from two or more races. 4.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 186 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% are married couples living together, 13.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% are non-families. 27.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.87 and the average family size is 3.49.

In the Indian reservation the population is spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.2 males.

The median income for a household in the Indian reservation is $25,208, and the median income for a family is $36,563. Males have a median income of $31,250 versus $12,159 for females. The per capita income for the Indian reservation is $12,201. 16.1% of the population and 12.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.5% are under the age of 18 and 16.1% are 65 or older.
