Tolland County, Connecticut

Tolland County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. State of Connecticut. As of 2000, the population is 136,364.

Geography There are no incorporated cities in Tolland County.

The county has a total area of 1,080 km² (417 mi²). 1,062 km² (410 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.66% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 136,364 people, 49,431 households, and 34,156 families residing in the county. The population density is 128/km² (332/mi²). There are 51,570 housing units at an average density of 49 persons/km² (126 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.34% White, 2.72% African American, 0.21% Native American, 2.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.08% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 2.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 49,431 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 30.90% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 12.90% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 10.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 100.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $59,044, and the median income for a family is $70,856. Males have a median income of $46,619 versus $34,255 for females. The per capita income for the county is $25,474. 5.60% of the population and 2.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.60% are under the age of 18 and 5.20% are 65 or older.
