Tokugawa Ieyasu

Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川家康) became the founder of the Tokugawa dynasty of Japanese shoguns during the turmoil after the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He defeated his rivals at the battle of Sekigahara in 1600, seized power and revived the title of shogun that had been abandoned by Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

The Tokugawa shogunate he founded would endure until the mid-19th century, and while it would be a time of strict seclusion from the outside world, it would also be a period of peace and stability.
