Geography The county has a total area of 3,602 km² (1,391 mi²). 3,595 km² (1,388 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.20% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 9,050 people, 2,462 households, and 1,917 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (6/mi²). There are 2,766 housing units at an average density of 1 persons/km² (2 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 12.57% White, 0.09% African American, 85.60% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. 1.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,462 households out of which 48.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.20% are married couples living together, 31.80% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 22.10% are non-families. 18.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.62 and the average family size is 4.09.
