Tippecanoe County, Indiana

Tippecanoe County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 148,955. The county's county seat is Lafayette, Indiana6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,303 km² (503 mi²). 1,294 km² (500 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.65% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 148,955 people, 55,226 households, and 32,417 families residing in the county. The population density is 115/km² (298/mi²). There are 58,343 housing units at an average density of 45/km² (117/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.86% White, 2.52% African American, 0.28% Native American, 4.46% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.48% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 5.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 55,226 households out of which 28.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.90% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.30% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county the population is spread out with 20.90% under the age of 18, 25.40% from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44, 17.40% from 45 to 64, and 9.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 105.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,652, and the median income for a family is $51,791. Males have a median income of $37,606 versus $25,142 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,375. 15.40% of the population and 7.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.10% are under the age of 18 and 4.30% are 65 or older.
