Thomas County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 42,737. The county's county seat is Thomasville, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,430 km² (552 mi²). 1,420 km² (548 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.68% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 42,737 people, 16,309 households, and 11,465 families residing in the county. The population density is 30/km² (78/mi²). There are 18,285 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (33/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 58.98% White, 38.86% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 1.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,309 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.90% are married couples living together, 18.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 25.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.10% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 88.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,115, and the median income for a family is $39,239. Males have a median income of $28,395 versus $21,344 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,211. 17.40% of the population and 13.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.90% are under the age of 18 and 19.30% are 65 or older.
