The Jerk (1979) is Carl Reiner's rags-to-riches film comedy of belated self-discovery. Starring Steve Martin as the adopted white son of black sharecroppers, who grows to adulthood naively unaware of the fact of his adoption, this picture makes it hard to tell whether the director is making more fun of rural blacks or rednecked whites or greedy Jews.
