The Corinthian (Sandman)

The Corinthian is a fictional character in Neil Gaiman's comic book series The Sandman. He appears in the second story arc, "The Doll's House".

A creation of Dream's, he is AWOL from the dreamscape and Morpheus eventually catches up to him shortly after saving Rose Walker, the vortex, from harm. Morpheus states that the Corinthian was his masterpiece, "a nightmare created to be the darkness, and the fear of darkness in every human heart. A black mirror, made to reflect everything about itself that humanity will not confront." Instead, after walking the earth for some 40 years, eating the eyeballs (The Corinthian has no eyes but a mouth in each eye socket that contains jagged teeth which he hides with sunglasses) of young men, he has given nothing and been for nothing. Dream imparts his punishment by "uncreating" him and says the next time he makes him he "shall not be so flawed and petty". The Corinthian then turns to the dreamsand from which Morpheus made him.

Dream does eventually recreate the Corinthian. The Corinthian helps protect Daniel just before Morpheus dies.
