The Cars were an American New Wave band, one of the most popular to emerge out of the early punk scene in the late 1970s and made contact to Elektra Recorrds[?] in 1977 (1977 in music). Ric Ocasek[?] and Ben Orr[?] led the band through five years of dominance on the charts, culminating with 1984's Heartbeat City[?], which included the hit singles "Magic", "Drive" and "You Might Think" (see 1984 in music). After the resulting period of superstardom, the Cars quietly retired in 1987 (1987 in music).
