This is a term from the "Nine Nation of North America" by Joel Garreau, in which he argues that North America is divided not by state boudaries and national borders, but in terms of cultural divides. These cultrual divides are made up of 9 distinct areas. It is fascinating work, which I will not detail here, it is well worth a read.
