Famed movie critic Pauline Kael[?] was the resident critic for The Atlantic Monthly, until she was released from the magazine's staff (some say she was fired) after she wrote a blistering, negative review of the movie The Sound of Music.
On February 1, 1862 the first publication of Julia Ward Howe's "Battle Hymn of the Republic[?]" was was in the Atlantic Monthly. In February and March 1866 the first publication of The Freedman's Story[?] by William Parker[?] was also published therein.
