Telfair County, Georgia

Telfair County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 11,794. The county's county seat is McRae, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,150 km² (444 mi²). 1,142 km² (441 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.67% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,794 people, 4,140 households, and 2,873 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (27/mi²). There are 5,083 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 59.71% White, 38.44% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.16% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 1.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,140 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.40% are married couples living together, 16.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.60% are non-families. 28.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.50% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 30.10% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 110.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 113.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,097, and the median income for a family is $32,513. Males have a median income of $26,444 versus $19,970 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,197. 21.20% of the population and 17.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 26.40% are under the age of 18 and 23.70% are 65 or older.
