Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 44,598 people, 18,277 households, and 13,232 families residing in the county. The population density is 33/km² (86/mi²). There are 20,390 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (39/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.16% White, 2.29% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 0.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
