Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,165 people, 918 households, and 588 families residing in the town. The population density is 191.7/km² (496.0/mi²). There are 987 housing units at an average density of 87.4/km² (226.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.00% White, 4.02% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 0.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 918 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.7% are married couples living together, 16.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
