Tariff of Abominations

The so-called Tariff of Abominations was passed in 1828 at the urging of John Calhoun. It imposed high rates on raw materials as well as finished goods, aiming to discourage importation of goods and materials.

Actually the Tariff of Abominations was passed to Calhoun's great dismay!
