Talk:Pennsylvania German

I'm all for putting the language article under Pennsylvania German but creating a difference between the two terms in terms of reference (ie. that people = Pennsylvania Dutch and the language = Pennsylvania German) is something that only exists in Wikipedia. I have never seen this separation of meaning. Plus it gives the sense that Pennsylvania German is German spoken by Dutch people. I do support having two articles however one for the language and one for the people.
I'm not a registered user so I can't do it but someone should put what is now Pennsylvania German under Pennsylvania German language and what is Pennsylvania Dutch under Pennsylvania German. Then it would be more in line with other language articles.

(Look at the outside link on Pennsylvania German usage in non-Mennonite and non-Amish communities they don't use it like that. Pennsylvania Dutch and Pennsylvania German both refer to the language and the people)

Hey, 132.212.244.67, I think you're this Stoltzfus person: We really do appreciate your contributions but would also appreciate it if you would register. It's easy, free, and contributory!!

And it really would be helpful when you need a few functions like moving pages. These are restricted to registered users to discourage newbies from trying them, but you're not a newbie anymore! (And we all know who you are by now ^_^.) BTW, when the time comes to move this article to Pennsylvania German language, you won't be able to, since that article now has some history besides a single redirect -- but ask me (or any other administrator) and we can fix that for you. (Although I'd rather not do it until there's a consensus that it should be there and not at Pennsylvania Dutch language. But you're certainly right that the distinction would normally be made with the "language" term!) -- Toby 06:33 Feb 12, 2003 (UTC)

OK, I'm moving this to Pennsylvania German language. For now, Pennsylvania Dutch language will redirect to that, and Pennsylvania German will redirect to Pennsylvania Dutch. (Only a few articles directly link there; I will check them for possible redirection here.) Then people can move things back and forth between "Dutch" and "German" as they like, but the people and the language will be distinguished by the term "language", as they should be. -- Toby 02:43 Feb 20, 2003 (UTC)
