Talk:Ikhthis

In modern English we transliterate upsilon as a U rather than an I. Modern Greek, whatever its grammatical and vocabulary similarity to ancient Greek, has changed considerably in pronunciation. This is not to say that the way Western Europeans and Anglo-Americans read classical Greek out loud is better than the way modern Greek speakers read it out loud, but they sure are different. I am not sure of what you really mean. What is the connection with ιχθύς?

The standard English transliteration is Ichthus. Ikhthus would do. However, this entry seems to be a dictionary entry to me, and wikipedia is not a dictionary. MichaelTinkler

First: I do not have any objection to transliterating ιχθύς to Ichthus or Ikhthus -even though I have my doubts about the current transliteration system (because of lack of information). It was not my spelling. I just linked the word from the Greek language/Lexicon. If you feel that I should redirect it to another page with the different spelling I can do it.

Second: I agree as well that wikipedia is not a dictionary. If I had added a link saying simply that ιχθύς is the greek word for fish that would have been a dictionary entry. The current page, though, gives some specific information about the connection of the symbol and Christianity. Maybe it would have been better if I had a picture of some sort of the symbol used in catacombes or something but I don't. So I had to get by only with simply the name of the symbol.

Of course all of the above are simply my opinion and I would be very happy to discuss any objection. Eanorel

That sounds like it would make it better. MichaelTinkler
