The article stated (of GIF):
Deprecated for non-animated images in favor of PNG.
You can't just say that GIF is deprecated without saying who by. --Zundark, 2002 Mar 16

Also, "deprecated" implies that it was a standard in the first place; GIF has never been a standard of any kind. It was a proprietary format of CompuServe, Inc., and became something of a de facto standard for BBS and Web use, but no standards body ever endorsed it. --LDC
