Systems thinking

Systems Thinking can be defined as the ability to understand the pieces that comprise the whole.

It's an appreciation of the consequences of actions on other parts of the system.

Systems thinkers have the "Big Picture." They think in context. They perceive the linkages within the system and understands how their actions impact others in the organization.

They have an understanding of the concept system and how it applies to an organization:

  • a system is a dynamic and complex whole, interacting as a structured functional unit in equilibrium
  • information flows between the different elements that compose the system
  • a system is a community situated within an environment
  • information flows from and to the surrounding environment via semi-permeable membranes
