Sylvania, Alabama

Sylvania is a town located in DeKalb County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 1,186.

Geography Sylvania is located at 34°33'30" North, 85°47'46" West (34.558304, -85.796154)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.3 km² (7.4 mi²). 19.0 km² (7.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.48% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,186 people, 485 households, and 354 families residing in the town. The population density is 62.5/km² (161.9/mi²). There are 517 housing units at an average density of 27.2/km² (70.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.37% White, 0.08% African American, 1.18% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 485 households out of which 34.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% are non-families. 25.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $28,553, and the median income for a family is $35,000. Males have a median income of $28,681 versus $19,620 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,561. 16.6% of the population and 13.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.9% are under the age of 18 and 30.7% are 65 or older.
