Superfly (soundtrack)

Superfly was a 1972 (see 1972 in music) film whose soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield is widely considered a classic of early-1970s soul. Released in July of 1972, Superfly was a nearly immediate hit, with sales bolstered by popular songs like "Freddy's Dead".

Superfly, along with Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, was one of the pioneering soul albums, with its then-unique socially aware lyrics about poverty and drug abuse making the album stand out. Like What's Going On, the album was a surprise hit that record executives felt had little chance at significant sales.
