Sumter County, Alabama

History Sumter County was established on December 18, 1832.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,365 km² (913 mi²). 2,344 km² (905 mi²) of it is land and 22 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.92% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 14,798 people, 5,708 households, and 3,664 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (16/mi²). There are 6,953 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 25.92% White, 73.17% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,708 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.70% are married couples living together, 23.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.80% are non-families. 31.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.26.

In the county the population is spread out with 29.10% under the age of 18, 12.20% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 19.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 84.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $18,911, and the median income for a family is $23,176. Males have a median income of $28,059 versus $17,574 for females. The per capita income for the county is $11,491. 38.70% of the population and 32.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 47.40% are under the age of 18 and 36.10% are 65 or older.
