Sumner is a town located in Chariton County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 142.

Geography Sumner is located at 39°39'23" North, 93°14'36" West (39.656342, -93.243426)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 142 people, 66 households, and 34 families residing in the town. The population density is 210.9/km² (549.7/mi²). There are 99 housing units at an average density of 147.0/km² (383.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.18% White, 0.70% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 66 households out of which 22.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.9% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.0% are non-families. 42.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 77.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $14,792, and the median income for a family is $23,750. Males have a median income of $26,250 versus $14,583 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,025. 32.5% of the population and 30.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 51.6% are under the age of 18 and 13.5% are 65 or older.
