Sullivan County, Tennessee

Sullivan County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 153,048. Its county seat is Blountville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,113 km² (430 mi²). 1,070 km² (413 mi²) of it is land and 43 km² (17 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.88% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 153,048 people, 63,556 households, and 44,806 families residing in the county. The population density is 143/km² (371/mi²). There are 69,052 housing units at an average density of 65/km² (167/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.55% White, 1.89% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 63,556 households out of which 28.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.10% are married couples living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.50% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.84.

In the county, the population is spread out with 21.80% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 26.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,529, and the median income for a family is $41,025. Males have a median income of $31,204 versus $21,653 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,202. 12.90% of the population and 9.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.10% are under the age of 18 and 11.90% are 65 or older.
