Sullivan County, New Hampshire

Sullivan County is a county located in the U.S. State of New Hampshire. As of 2000, the population is 40,458. Its county seat is Newport[?]6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,429 km² (552 mi²). 1,392 km² (537 mi²) of it is land and 38 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.63% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 40,458 people, 16,530 households, and 11,174 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (75/mi²). There are 20,158 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (38/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.99% White, 0.24% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,530 households out of which 29.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.70% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.40% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 25.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 97.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,938, and the median income for a family is $48,516. Males have a median income of $32,185 versus $24,615 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,319. 8.50% of the population and 5.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.50% are under the age of 18 and 8.80% are 65 or older.
