History Sublette County was organized in 1921.
Sublette is a place of great natural beauty, and the site of two important ranges of the Rocky Mountains: the Wyoming and the Wind River ranges. Historically, the area was important to the fur trade, and the county itself takes its name from one of Wyoming?s early fur traders, William L. Sublette. Today the county celebrates its fur trade heritage with the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale.
Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 12,783 km² (4,936 mi²). 12,646 km² (4,883 mi²) of it is land and 137 km² (53 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.08% water.
Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 5,920 people, 2,371 households, and 1,707 families residing in the county. The population density is 0/km² (1/mi²). There are 3,552 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.48% White, 0.20% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 1.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,371 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.30% are married couples living together, 5.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.91.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 6.00% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 28.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 104.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $39,044, and the median income for a family is $45,000. Males have a median income of $35,000 versus $21,109 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,056. 9.70% of the population and 7.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.40% are under the age of 18 and 8.70% are 65 or older.
