Stolin

Stolin is an old city, that grew up at the heart of Palyessye on the river Horyn [Goryn], at the intersection of three roads, one leading northwards to Pinsk, two others eastwards to Davyd-Gorodok and Turov, that are now in Belarus, southwards to Sarny and Kiev, that are now in the Ukraine. Nowadays Stolin is the capital of the largest district in Brestskaya voblast. Population of Stolin is 12.5 thousand people (2002). The Belarusian-Ukrainian border is about 15 km away, actually Stolin is now a border city that hosts a lot of Ukrainians on the market days. Russian speech is common here, but villagers prefer their dialects that are numerous and akin partly to the Belarusian language, partly the Ukrainian language.
