Stewart County, Tennessee

Stewart County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 12,370. Its county seat is Dover6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,277 km² (493 mi²). 1,187 km² (458 mi²) of it is land and 90 km² (35 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.04% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 12,370 people, 4,930 households, and 3,653 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (27/mi²). There are 5,977 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.27% White, 1.29% African American, 0.61% Native American, 1.46% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,930 households out of which 31.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.30% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 23.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 99.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,316, and the median income for a family is $38,655. Males have a median income of $31,106 versus $21,985 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,302. 12.40% of the population and 10.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.90% are under the age of 18 and 15.60% are 65 or older.
