Steuben, New York

Steuben is a town located in Oneida County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,172.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 110.6 km² (42.7 mi²). 110.6 km² (42.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,172 people, 429 households, and 332 families residing in the town. The population density is 10.6/km² (27.4/mi²). There are 460 housing units at an average density of 4.2/km² (10.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.55% White, 0.51% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.34% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 429 households out of which 36.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% are non-families. 16.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $41,136, and the median income for a family is $44,583. Males have a median income of $29,625 versus $21,635 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,385. 9.9% of the population and 8.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.7% are under the age of 18 and 14.0% are 65 or older.
